Here are some great family Easter celebration ideas. With the arrival of Easter the dark and cold of winter give way to spring. So no matter your beliefs, gather your family, your friends and celebrate Everything Easter and spring!
Easter decorations are always fun for the kids to make. One of our favorites was the Easter Cross. We would pick up the small twigs and branches around the lawn and wire them into a cross. Add some artificial spring flowers and ribbon and you have a beautiful door decoration for any interior or outside door. Best of all, the kids could make this special decoration themselves with little expense or mess.
Easter Egg decorating is another traditional Easter celebration idea. There are multitudes of egg decorating kits available in the stores that make colorful and easy dyed eggs. Just make sure you hard-boil your eggs first. Seems like that is an oxymoron, but it’s happened more than once that we forgot in the midst of the excitement! Once dyed the kids can decorate their Easter eggs with stickers or markers. They can paint on them and even glue on trims! Place an egg or two in a small green plant and you have a great table centerpiece, table favors or Easter gifts for the grandparents.
Your Easter Dinner Menu can be easy. Our favorite is the original “Honey Baked Ham” which you order on line. Costco actually has their own brand, which is a delicious and less expensive alternative. Add a potato crowd pleaser like this delicious Cheesy Scalloped Potato recipe. Make a healthy and colorful side dish like these roasted fresh vegetables. With kids around, I always put out a vegetable platter with dip, it is a sure fire way to get them to eat veggies. Make some freshly baked rolls, a colorful fruit filled jello mold and you can feed a large crowd economically. You can also make your own Bunny cake using this Wilton Step-by-Step Bunny Pan.
My sister-in-law does the most awesome Easter dessert. She make Easter Egg Cakes. Use a cake or muffin mix and make like you would any cupcake. Some stores sell oval shaped cupcake tins which will look more like eggs. With a cake decorating tool like this Norpro 8 Piece Decorating Set she adds just a touch of frosting and a colored candy egg and it is a beautiful presentation. She is amazing, look at how fabulous her dessert plate looks!
Have you heard about cake balls? They are all the rage, migrating from Texas to everywhere! Cake balls are a cross between a bite-sized cupcake, candy and a "Dunkin Munchkin". Here's instructions for how to make Cake Balls. It is an easy dessert recipe which will be a festive addition to your Easter dinner. Use seasonal frosting colors, candies and decorations and you will "WOW" your guests.
An Easter egg hunt is one of many family Easter celebration ideas. Our spin on the traditional egg hunt does not use eggs. We have a “Bunny Trail” scavenger hunt. I buy various Easter themed items, make up some clues and send the kids (with their parents if they are small) to find the trail to the Bunny Basket! Yes, there is only one basket, but fill it with plenty of goodies for all to share. Here are the set of clues I used one year and sent them all over the neighborhood in search of the basket! Items needed for this include: Bunny ears, bunny hairclips, a rabbits foot, bunny jewelry, plastic eggs, a stuffed bunny and of course the big basket! As they got older, I updated the contents of the basket to include Itunes gifts cards, lottery tickets, restaurant, fast food, video store, Barnes and Noble, Target/Wall-Mart of Starbucks cards. It is always a hoot!! When the kids were in high school, we ran this one year for all their friends. I was not sure how it would be received, but it was a huge success! Guess it goes to prove you are just never too old for an Easter Egg Hunt!!
Here is a set of our Bunny Trail Hunt clues.. Adapt the clues to your own neighborhood!
